Binaural Technique – Past and Present

چکیده

The main idea of binaural technique is to reproduce the complete auditive experience of a human listener. In theory, this is achieved by recording and reproducing the two signals at the listener’s left and right eardrum. In binaural technology, first steps were made in the 1880s especially in the field of recordings. Over the decades this technology has evolved significantly. However, some challenges related to achieving an exact auditory replication remain. Nowadays, an artificial head is used on the recording side, which can be regarded as a good approximation of the human head. On the reproduction side, different techniques for different applications exist. Two of them are headphone reproduction and the reproduction of binaural signals using loudspeakers.

The importance of binaural hearing for noise valuation

In a project that has been funded by the German Ministery of Research and Technology (BMFT) fundamental questions of noise valuation have been addressed by an interdisciplinary research consortium. The aim of the project was to provide knowledge that will lead to a new, binaural and aurally-adequate measurement technique which can especially be used for the valuation of the effects of noise for...

Binaural beat stimulation - a non-invasive method for inducing zebrafish growth

An initial experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effects of binaural beats on fish growth performance. A 90-day trial with four triplicate groups was conducted with 240 zebrafish, Danio rerio, under aquarium conditions. Binaural beat file complexes were played for each aquarium using computer controlled directional speakers for 0 min d-1(Control), 90 min d-1(Group 1), 180 min d-1 (Gr...

Acceptance of noise with monaural and binaural amplification.

The present study investigated the effects of monaural and binaural amplification on speech understanding in noise and acceptance of noise for 39 listeners with hearing impairment. Results demonstrated that speech understanding in noise improved with binaural amplification; however, acceptance of noise was not dependent on monaural or binaural amplification for most listeners. These results sug...

The Hough Transform for Binaural Source Localization

We introduce a new technique for the blind localization of several sound sources from two binaural signals. First, the binaural signals are organized as two-dimensional data where each sound source appears as a line. Second, the Hough transform is used to recognize these lines. The slopes of the lines give the mixing coefficients and directions of arrival (azimuths). Two variants of our techniq...
